Indoor: Place in the brightest spot possible. A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal. If it doesn't get enough light, it will stretch (etiolate) and lose its compact shape.
Outdoor: Thrives in bright, filtered sunlight or partial shade. Intense, direct afternoon summer sun can sometimes scorch the plant, so a bit of afternoon protection is perfect.
💧 Watering (The "Soak and Dry" Method)
Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil has completely dried out. Pour water until it drains out the bottom, then empty the saucer.
Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering significantly. The plant enters dormancy during colder months and needs barely any water (maybe once every 4 to 6 weeks, just to keep the roots from completely shriveling).
Rule of Thumb: When in doubt, leave it dry. Overwatering is the quickest way to cause root rot.
🪺 Soil & Potting
The Mix: Needs exceptionally well-draining soil. Use a commercial cactus/succulent mix amended with 50% grit, perlite, or coarse sand to ensure fast drainage.
The Pot: Always use a container with drainage holes. Terracotta or clay pots are highly recommended as they allow moisture to evaporate through the walls.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18°C and 30°C.
Cold Tolerance: Can tolerate cooler winter temperatures down to about 5°C if kept completely dry, but it must be protected from frost.
Humidity: Thrives in dry, low-humidity environments. Avoid humid rooms like bathrooms.
🌿 Feeding & Fertilizer
Feed once or twice during the active growing season (spring and summer) using a balanced liquid cactus fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Do not fertilize in winter.
🌱 Handling
Handling: The white, interlaced spines are relatively soft compared to other cacti, but they can still hook onto skin or clothing. Handle with care or use tweezers/gloves.
⚠️ Quick Troubleshooter
Soft, mushy, or yellowing base: Sign of overwatering or rot. Cut away healthy offsets immediately to propagate and save the plant.
Stretching/growing tall and skinny: Needs more light.
Shriveling stems: The plant is extremely dry. If the soil is bone dry, give it a good soak.
