Complete Care Guide

☀️ Light & Color Intensity

  • The Golden Rule: Light is the secret to keeping this plant beautiful. The more bright, indirect sunlight it receives, the more intense and vibrant its colourful stripes will be.
  • Indoor: Place it on a sunny south- or west-facing windowsill. If it sits in too much shade, the vivid colour spots will fade to a dull green, and the plant will grow leggy.
  • Outdoor: Thrives in partial sun. Be cautious with harsh, blazing afternoon summer sun, which can occasionally sunburn the leaves.

💧 Watering (The "Soak and Dry" Method)

  • Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the potting mix is 100% dry all the way through. Drench the soil until water runs out of the drainage holes, then empty the tray.
  • Autumn & Winter: Drastically cut back on watering. The plant's growth slows down significantly in the colder months, and it only needs a light watering every few weeks to keep the leaves from severely wrinkling.
  • Note: Always water the soil directly. Avoid getting water trapped in the rosette of the leaves, as this can invite fungal rot.

🪺 Soil & Potting

  • The Mix: Requires an incredibly gritty, fast-draining substrate. A high-quality commercial cactus and succulent mix mixed with 40% to 50% perlite, pumice, or coarse grit works perfectly.
  • The Pot: Choose a pot with excellent drainage holes. Terracotta pots are ideal because they breathe, helping the soil dry out evenly.

🌡️ Temperature & Hardiness

  • Ideal Range: Prefers warm temperatures between 15°C and 28°C.
  • Cold Tolerance: It is not frost-hardy. It can tolerate brief drops down to about 10°C, but it should be moved indoors or protected if temperatures plunge lower.

🌿 Maintenance & Pruning

  • Grooming: Over time, the lower leaves will naturally wither and drop as the plant grows; simply pull them away gently when they are completely dry.
  • Flowering: In spring or mid-summer, it sends up a tall, branched flower spike with small, subtle purple/green flowers. If the plant becomes too top-heavy or leggy after flowering, you can safely prune the top stem to encourage a bushier, multi-headed look.

⚠️ Quick Troubleshooter

  • Fading spots / pale green leaves: The plant is starved for light. Move it to a sunnier spot.
  • Leaves turning soft and translucent: Classic sign of overwatering. Stop watering immediately and check the roots for rot.
  • Wrinkling leaves: If the soil is bone-dry and the leaves feel flexible or wrinkled, the plant is thirsty and ready for a deep drink.
