Haworthiopsis limifolia

Fairy Washboard

Complete Care Guide

☀️ Light Requirements

Indoors: Thrives in bright, indirect light. An east- or north-facing windowsill is perfect. They can tolerate some gentle morning direct sun, but avoid harsh, hot afternoon sun, which can scorch or bleach the leaves (turning them pale or purplish-red).

Outdoors: Provide partial shade or filtered sunlight (e.g., under a patio cover or tree canopy).

  • The Intensity: Insufficient light can cause the plant to "stretch" (etiolate), losing its compact, star-like shape.
  • The "Sunburn" Test: If the leaves turn pale or develop purplish-red discoloration, it's getting too much direct sun.
  • 💧 Watering Needs

As a drought-tolerant succulent, it stores water in its thick leaves. Always allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

  • The "Soak and Dry" Method: Drench the soil completely until water runs out of the drainage hole, then let it drain freely. Never let the pot sit in standing water.
  • Winter Dormancy: Reduce watering frequency significantly during winter (e.g., once a month or less) to prevent root rot.
  • Signs of Thirst: If the leaves begin to look slightly thin, curled, or wrinkled, it is time for a drink.
  • 🪺 Soil & Potting

Use a specialized, fast-draining cactus/succulent mix. You can improve drainage further by amending standard mix with 50% inorganic components like perlite, pumice, or coarse sand.

  • Pot Type: Plant in a pot with at least one drainage hole. Terracotta or unglazed ceramic pots are excellent because they allow the soil to dry out faster.
  • Pot Size: Haworthiopsis prefer being slightly pot-bound. Choose a pot that is just slightly larger than the root ball.
  • 🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

    • Temperature: Ideal indoor temperatures range between 65°F–80°F (18°C–27°C). Protect the plant from freezing temperatures; do not let it drop below 50°F (10°C).
    • Humidity: Average household humidity (40–50%) is perfectly fine. They prefer good air circulation, so avoid cramming them into tight, stagnant corners.

    🌿 Feeding & Maintenance

    Fertilizer

Feed sparingly. Use a balanced, half-strength liquid succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in summer during the active growing season. Do not fertilize in the winter.

    Pruning

No regular pruning is required. Simply pull away any dead, dried-up lower leaves as the plant grows.

    ⚠️ Common Problems & Troubleshooting

    • Root Rot (Mushy, black leaves/stem): Caused by overwatering or poorly draining soil. To save the plant, cut away rotting roots, let the healthy parts callous over, and repot in fresh, dry soil.
    • Leaf Scorch (Brown/bleached spots): Caused by sudden exposure to intense, direct sunlight. Move the plant to a shadier location.
    • Shriveled or Wrinkled Leaves: Can be a sign of severe underwatering, but if the soil is wet, it is a symptom of root rot. Check the root system to determine the cause.
