Indoors: Thrives in bright, indirect light. An east- or north-facing windowsill is perfect. They can tolerate some gentle morning direct sun, but avoid harsh, hot afternoon sun, which can scorch or bleach the leaves (turning them pale or purplish-red).
Outdoors: Provide partial shade or filtered sunlight (e.g., under a patio cover or tree canopy).
As a drought-tolerant succulent, it stores water in its thick leaves. Always allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
Use a specialized, fast-draining cactus/succulent mix. You can improve drainage further by amending standard mix with 50% inorganic components like perlite, pumice, or coarse sand.
Feed sparingly. Use a balanced, half-strength liquid succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in summer during the active growing season. Do not fertilize in the winter.
No regular pruning is required. Simply pull away any dead, dried-up lower leaves as the plant grows.
