Echeveria runonii

Topsy Turvy

Complete Care Guide

☀️ Light & Form

  • The Key to Shape: This plant needs bright, direct sunlight to maintain its tight, compact rosette and distinct architectural look.
  • Indoor: Place it on your brightest south- or west-facing windowsill. If it does not get enough light, the rosette will flatten out, stretch upward, and lose its unique "topsy turvy" curl.
  • Outdoor: Thrives in full sun to light afternoon shade. In the peak of mid-summer, a tiny bit of protection from the harshest afternoon sun can prevent leaf scorch.

💧 Watering (The "Soak and Dry" Method)

  • Spring & Summer: Water deeply only when the potting mix is completely dry all the way to the bottom of the pot. Pour water until it drains freely from the base, then empty the saucer.
  • Autumn & Winter: Safely reduce watering to once every few weeks, giving just enough to keep the leaves from completely shriveling.
  • Pro Tip: Never water directly into the center of the rosette. Water can pool in the cupped leaves, which quickly leads to crown rot. Always water the soil around the base of the plant.

🪺 Soil & Potting

  • The Mix: Requires excellent drainage. Use a commercial cactus and succulent soil amended with 40% to 50% grit, coarse sand, or perlite.
  • The Pot: A pot with drainage holes is non-negotiable. Gritty soil paired with a terracotta pot is the best setup to ensure the roots never sit in stagnant moisture.
  • Farina Note: The leaves are coated in a powdery wax called farina, which acts as a natural sunscreen. Avoid touching the leaves unnecessarily, as this wax rubs off easily and leaves permanent smudges.

🌡️ Temperature & Hardiness

  • Ideal Range: Prefers warm, dry climates between 15°C and 27°C.
  • Cold Tolerance: It is tender to frost. It can handle cool winter dips down to about 5°C if the soil is kept bone-dry, but it should be protected from freezing weather.

🌸 Blooming & Maintenance

  • Flowers: In late summer or autumn, it produces beautiful, arching stems with bright orange and yellow bell-shaped flowers. Once the blooms fade, simply snip the stalk off near the base.
  • Grooming: The lowest, oldest leaves will naturally dry up and turn crispy as the plant grows. Gently pull these dead leaves away to prevent pests (like mealybugs) from hiding underneath them.

⚠️ Quick Troubleshooter

  • Rosette flattening and turning pale green: It is asking for more sunlight. Move it to a brighter location.
  • Lower leaves turning yellow, translucent, and mushy: Classic sign of overwatering. Let the plant dry out completely, and check the stem for rot.
  • White cotton-like fluff in the leaf crevices: Mealybugs. Treat them immediately by dabbing them with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol.
